SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set in the 1960s, the musical unfolds in a quiet rural village school, where a newly appointed young teacher and his students navigate love, admiration, and emotional awakening.

Fresh out of teachers’ college, Kang Dong-su arrives at his first post with enthusiasm and youthful ambition. In the village, he meets what he assumes is a local woman, only to discover she is actually one of his students, Hong-yeon, a late-enrolled sixteen-year-old girl. Innocent yet emotionally expressive, Hong-yeon quickly develops a deep affection for her teacher after he addresses her as “a young lady,” awakening her sense of identity and womanhood.

Hong-yeon expresses her feelings through daily diary entries filled with naive love letters, while diligently preparing small gestures such as flowers for Dong-su. Meanwhile, Dong-su finds himself drawn not to Hong-yeon but to Yang Su-jeong, a sophisticated and older colleague from Seoul. As he awkwardly attempts to grow closer to her, he remains oblivious to Hong-yeon’s deepening emotions.

The fragile balance collapses when Hong-yeon witnesses Dong-su’s affection for Yang and later reads his personal diary, confirming his true feelings. Heartbroken, she confronts her emotions, while Dong-su, preparing to confess his love, learns of Yang’s impending marriage. The intertwined relationships culminate in a bittersweet emotional resolution, capturing the fleeting innocence and pain of first love.

PRODUCTION NOTE

The musical is based on the novel The Female Student by Ha Geun-chan and was adapted through the well-known film The Harmonium in My Memory. Premiering in 2008, the production quickly gained critical acclaim, winning six awards at the Korean Musical Awards, including Best Musical. With a creative team featuring writer Lee Hee-jun, composers Kim Moon-jung and Choi Joo-young, and director Jo Gwang-hwa (later revived under director Oh Man-seok), the musical is noted for its refined emotional storytelling and nostalgic portrayal of rural life in mid-20th century Korea.
