K-Musicals Abroad

This section documents the international presence of Korean musical theatre and related productions involving Korean creators, producers, or companies. While the earliest exports appeared in the United States and the United Kingdom with productions such as The Last Empress (명성황후), the global circulation of Korean musical theatre has expanded significantly since the late 2000s.

Today, Korean musicals appear internationally in several different forms: fully licensed productions, international premieres, collaborative projects developed with foreign partners, and works involving Korean producers or creative teams within Western productions. In English-language markets especially, Korean participation has ranged from exporting original works to contributing to the development and production of new Broadway or West End shows.

Among the most widely exported titles are Finding Mr. Destiny (김종욱 찾기), which has been revived regularly in Japan since its Tokyo debut; Fan Letter (팬레터), which has become a recurring title in Tokyo’s small-theatre circuit; and Xcalibur (엑스칼리버), which expanded through large-scale licensed stagings in Japan. Marie Curie (마리 퀴리) has also begun developing an English-language presence through productions in London.

Where possible, this archive documents production timelines, creative teams, cast information, media coverage, and reception in local markets. In other cases, it preserves partial records that trace the gradual international circulation of Korean musical theatre—from early cultural exchanges and single-run appearances to long-term licensed repertoires.

To reflect the different types of involvement, this section is divided into four categories:
