SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set during the late 16th century amid the Imjin War, the musical unfolds across the Korean peninsula and surrounding seas, where Admiral Yi Sun-sin confronts war, leadership, and the burden of humanity.

The story begins with diplomatic tensions, as envoys returning from Japan present conflicting views about Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s intentions. Soon after, war breaks out, and Japanese forces rapidly advance into Joseon territory, forcing King Seonjo to flee north.

Yi Sun-sin, appointed as the naval commander of Jeolla Province prior to the war, leads his fleet to a series of crucial victories, beginning with the Battle of Okpo. He rescues prisoners, treats even enemy captives with humanity, and becomes a symbol of resistance. However, internal conflicts arise as rival commanders such as Won Gyun act out of greed and cruelty, and the royal court fails to properly reward Yi’s achievements.

As the war drags on, Yi Sun-sin suffers physically and psychologically, haunted by nightmares and weighed down by concern for his family. Even after his decisive victory at the Battle of Hansan, he becomes increasingly aware of the toll of war on himself and others. Around him, figures on both sides—Japanese commanders and even the king—descend into instability and desperation.

Despite exhaustion and dwindling supplies, Yi continues to lead his navy. In a poignant moment, he shares the hardships of his soldiers by consuming food he personally detests, symbolizing his sacrifice. As the war nears its end and the sea glimmers with schools of fish, Yi envisions fleeting images of his loved ones, capturing the fragile boundary between life, memory, and loss.

PRODUCTION NOTE

Premiering in 2008 as an outdoor production, the musical was later expanded into large-scale indoor productions under titles such as Yi Sun-sin – Imjin War Edition (2009) and Yi Sun-sin – Complete Edition (2010). Directed by Lee Yoon-taek and starring Min Young-ki, the production is notable for its large ensemble cast, elaborate naval battle staging with full-scale ships, and reinterpretation of Yi Sun-sin as a deeply human figure rather than a distant national hero. The musical toured extensively across Korea and was broadcast on television.
