SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set in the Silla kingdom, the musical unfolds around royal prophecy, political intrigue, and the journey of Princess Deokman toward becoming Queen Seondeok.
At a time when power is concentrated in the hands of the ambitious court figure Mishil, a royal prophecy foretells upheaval: the birth of twins signals danger to the royal bloodline. King Jinpyeong secretly sends away one of his twin daughters, Deokman, to protect the throne from political manipulation.
Raised far from the palace in exile, Deokman grows up unaware of her true identity. After losing her guardian, she begins a journey back to Silla in search of her origins. Along the way, she meets Cheonmyeong, her twin sister—though neither recognizes their bond—and the two form a deep friendship while searching for the legendary Hwarang leader Munno.
As political conspiracies intensify, Mishil seeks to eliminate threats to her power. Deokman gradually uncovers her identity and becomes entangled in court struggles, forming alliances with key figures such as Kim Yushin. Through hardship, separation, and sacrifice—including the death of her sister Cheonmyeong—Deokman awakens to her destiny.
Ultimately, Deokman embraces her royal identity, consolidates power, and ascends the throne as Silla’s first queen, marking a historic turning point while carrying the emotional weight of loss and responsibility.
PRODUCTION NOTE
Adapted from the hit TV drama Queen Seondeok, the musical was produced by Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation as its first original musical project aimed at international markets. Featuring music by Kim Hyun-bo and book and lyrics by Park Sun-ja, the production incorporated large-scale LED stage design, including a stylized Cheomseongdae observatory, and blended historical narrative with modern theatrical aesthetics.
