SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set in 1950 during the early phase of the Korean War, the musical unfolds along the Imjin River and across multiple battlefronts, where seven soldiers struggle to survive while fulfilling their duty amid chaos and loss.

The story begins when seven soldiers become isolated near the Imjin River following a surprise attack by North Korean forces. Trapped behind enemy lines, tensions rise as their platoon leader fails to produce an escape plan, leading to internal conflict.
In a desperate attempt to save his men, the leader plans a self-sacrificial diversion. However, a wounded soldier takes his place, drawing enemy attention and allowing the others to escape. The group is scattered in the process, each encountering the brutal realities of war.

As they journey across war-torn regions, the soldiers witness personal tragedies—families destroyed, loved ones lost, and civilians suffering. Some attempt to return home, only to find devastation awaiting them. Others continue moving south, encountering further violence and destruction.

Eventually, several members regroup while honoring a promise made to a fallen comrade, undertaking a rescue mission to save a captured civilian. Disguising themselves and infiltrating enemy lines, they narrowly escape during a moment of battlefield chaos.

Reunited, the soldiers come to understand the weight of their duty—not only to survive but to protect what remains of their country and loved ones. They regroup at the Nakdong River defensive line, where they continue fighting.

The musical concludes with the successful defense of the Nakdong line, the turning tide marked by the Incheon Landing, and the restoration of Seoul, symbolized by the raising of the national flag.

PRODUCTION NOTE

The Promise was produced in 2013 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, jointly organized by the Ministry of National Defense, the Republic of Korea Army Headquarters, and the Korea Musical Association. As the third military-produced musical following MINE (2008) and Voyage of Life (2010), it aimed to move beyond propaganda by focusing on individual human stories within wartime. Featuring active-duty celebrity soldiers such as Kim Mu-yeol, Ji Hyun-woo, and Leeteuk, the production gained significant public attention.
