SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set in a fictional modernized version of Elsinore, the musical unfolds within a royal court consumed by betrayal, where a prince struggles between moral hesitation and the demand for revenge.
Following the sudden death of the king, Prince Hamlet returns to find his uncle Claudius crowned as the new king and his mother Gertrude hastily remarried to him. This sequence of events throws Hamlet into deep emotional turmoil, as he grapples with grief, anger, and suspicion.
One night, the ghost of his father appears before him, revealing that he was murdered by Claudius and demanding revenge. Determined to uncover the truth, Hamlet devises a plan: he stages a play that mirrors the circumstances of the king’s death, hoping to provoke a reaction from Claudius.
The plan succeeds. Claudius’s visible distress confirms Hamlet’s suspicions, solidifying his resolve. However, Hamlet remains caught in hesitation, questioning not only the morality of revenge but also the nature of existence itself.
As tensions escalate, relationships unravel. Ophelia descends into madness following the turmoil surrounding Hamlet, while Gertrude becomes entangled in the consequences of her choices. Claudius, torn between guilt and ambition, struggles to maintain his grip on power.
In the final act, the conflicts culminate in a fatal confrontation. Death becomes inevitable for many of the central characters, including Hamlet himself. Yet the musical frames this conclusion not merely as tragedy, but as an assertion of life—highlighting the intensity of human struggle, choice, and existence in the face of inevitable fate.
PRODUCTION NOTE
Hamlet: Alive was developed as a contemporary reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, produced by CJ E&M and premiered in 2017. The work builds upon earlier experimental productions (including the university-stage project “Hamlet: La Vida”) and reconstructs them into a large-scale musical.
Directed by Adrian Osmond with music by Kim Kyung-yuk, the production emphasizes psychological depth and modern aesthetics, incorporating contemporary costumes, staging, and symbolic design elements. While maintaining the core narrative of the original play, the musical reorders key moments—such as repositioning the “To be or not to be” soliloquy—and amplifies character agency to better suit musical dramaturgy.
