SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set in a modern or late-20th-century setting, the musical unfolds within the world of classical composition, where the pursuit of artistic perfection leads to moral collapse.
J, once hailed as a genius composer at the age of nineteen, is unable to produce any new work after his debut success. Haunted by expectations and the fear of being forgotten, he lives in constant anxiety and creative paralysis. Seeking guidance, he turns to Professor K, a respected figure in the classical music world.
Despite rigorous effort, J continues to face failure and harsh criticism. His growing self-doubt drives him to the brink of despair. One day, he witnesses a fatal accident, and in that moment, he experiences a sudden surge of inspiration. The shock of death triggers the creation of an extraordinary musical idea.
Realizing the connection between death and artistic inspiration, J composes the first movement of what becomes known as the “Mad Flame Sonata.” Professor K, recognizing the potential of this phenomenon, begins to encourage J to pursue increasingly extreme experiences to complete the work.
As J continues, he commits acts of violence to recreate the intensity of inspiration. Each act brings him closer to completing the sonata, but also further into moral and psychological disintegration. His relationship with his longtime friend S, a talented composer in his own right, becomes increasingly strained as obsession takes over.
In the final stage, K pushes J to sacrifice even S to achieve the ultimate artistic masterpiece. Faced with this irreversible decision, J must confront the full cost of his pursuit—whether the completion of the sonata is worth the destruction of everything human within him.
The musical ends as both a psychological thriller and a philosophical inquiry, questioning whether true art can justify immorality and what remains of a person consumed by obsession.
PRODUCTION NOTE
Mad Flame Sonata premiered in 2017, produced by Asia Bridge Contents, and is based on Kim Dong-in’s 1930 short story. While the original text presents a provocative exploration of artistic extremity, the musical significantly reconstructs the narrative, introducing a three-character structure (J, S, K) and expanding the dramatic conflict.
The production is distinguished by its live chamber trio—piano, violin, and cello—performed onstage, with actors sometimes directly engaging in musical performance. Developed initially through a tryout production, the work gained recognition as a standout original musical and has since undergone multiple revivals with evolving production teams, including Yeonwoo Stage and Romantic Barricade.
The musical diverges substantially from its source, particularly by intensifying the role of Professor K as an active instigator of violence and by framing the story as a psychological thriller centered on artistic obsession rather than a purely literary exploration.
