SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set in May 1980 in Gwangju, the musical unfolds across the city as citizens confront martial law forces and struggle to defend their dignity and freedom.

Following the assassination of a dictator, citizens including teacher Yoon Igeon and activist Jeong Hwain believe a democratic future is within reach. However, a new military power seizes control and orchestrates a plan to suppress Gwangju by labeling its citizens as rioters. Disguised special forces are deployed to incite violence and justify brutal intervention.

As martial law expands and arrests of democratic figures intensify, chaos spreads throughout the city. In response, ordinary citizens organize themselves, forming a collective resistance against military oppression. Yoon Igeon and Jeong Hwain emerge as central figures in mobilizing the people, driven by personal conviction, loss, and a commitment to justice.

Meanwhile, Park Hansu, a soldier assigned to infiltrate the city under a false identity, experiences growing internal conflict as he witnesses the suffering of civilians. His perspective gradually shifts, reflecting the moral ambiguity and human cost of the conflict.

The musical culminates in the final days of resistance, as citizens face overwhelming force. Rather than focusing on a single hero, the story highlights the collective courage and sacrifice of ordinary people, leaving a lasting reflection on truth, memory, and democracy.

PRODUCTION NOTE

Gwangju was developed by LIVE Corp. and Theater Company Mabangzen as an original musical commemorating the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.

The production distinguishes itself from conventional historical musicals by adopting a montage-like structure, presenting multiple perspectives rather than a linear narrative. It integrates documentary imagery and ensemble-driven staging to emphasize collective experience over individual heroism.

The musical has undergone revisions across seasons, refining its narrative focus and character arcs while maintaining its core message about democracy and historical memory.
