Korean Original Musicals in Seoul Large Theaters

This page defines the scope, criteria, and methodology of the dataset.

This archive documents Korean original musicals with a focus on productions staged in large-scale theatres in Seoul. The selection is intentionally limited to Seoul large theatre productions in order to establish a consistent and comparable dataset. These productions typically represent the highest level of investment, technical capacity, and audience reach within the Korean musical industry, making them suitable reference points for structural and historical analysis.

By restricting the scope to this category, the archive avoids inconsistencies that may arise from including small-scale or regional productions, which often vary significantly in format, resources, and documentation quality. The 🔴 symbol is used throughout the archive to indicate “Seoul Large Theatre Productions.”

English titles are standardized as meaning-based literal translations, with minimal romanization applied only to proper nouns. This approach prioritizes semantic clarity and accessibility for international readers, while avoiding the ambiguity often associated with phonetic transliterations. When an official English title is available and verifiable, it is linked through a source reference; otherwise, the title is curated based on meaning.

Synopses are labeled as either “Full Synopsis” or “Partial Synopsis” to distinguish between entries with complete narrative coverage and those reconstructed from limited or fragmentary sources. This distinction is intended to maintain transparency regarding the level of detail and reliability of the narrative summary, especially in cases where official materials are unavailable.

All references are explicitly listed with source titles and links to ensure traceability and verification. The archive prioritizes structural consistency, source transparency, and long-term maintainability over exhaustive completeness.

Inclusion Criteria

The archive includes productions that meet the following conditions:

1. Theatre Scale

Musicals staged in Seoul theatres with a seating capacity of approximately 935 seats or more are included (benchmark: NOL Theater Daehakro Woori Card Hall and above).

2. Original Book (Korean Creative Basis)

Productions must feature a newly written Book by Korean creators.

Works that substantially revise an existing production—restructuring the narrative and recomposing music and lyrics—are treated as new works.

3. Localized Adaptations

Adaptations of foreign works are included only when they demonstrate significant structural transformation (i.e., heavily localized reinterpretation) and are produced in compliance with licensing agreements or with approval from the original rights holders.

4. Genre Scope (Expanded Definition of Musical)

The archive adopts an expanded definition of musical theatre and includes:

  • Conventional musicals

  • Akgeuk-based musical forms

  • Gamugeuk (song-dance theatre)

  • Early Korean musical forms (e.g., Yegrin productions)

  • –musical hybrid works

Film-integrated or live-dubbing musical performances

The defining criterion is the integration of music, narrative, and live stage performance.

This definition further incorporates early-era large-scale stage productions in which narrative is conveyed through a combination of choral performance, dance, solo singing, and theatrical staging, reflecting pre-standardized forms of Korean musical theatre.

It also remains open to hybrid and evolving formats that extend beyond conventional genre boundaries, provided that music, narrative, and live performance function as integrated structural elements.

5. Audience Scope

Productions labeled for pre-school audiences (e.g., “ages 5+”, “ages 4+”, or “60 months and above”) are excluded.

Works labeled “all ages” are evaluated based on their primary audience and narrative structure; productions intended for school-age audiences and above are included.

Exclusion Criteria

The following types of productions are excluded to maintain dataset consistency:

1. Concerts and Gala Performances

Music-driven performances without a sustained narrative structure.

2. Readings, Workshops, and Developmental Presentations

Non-final formats lacking full staging, including readings, showcases, and workshop presentations.

3. Non-Transformative Licensed Productions

Direct reproductions or translations of foreign works without substantial reinterpretation.

4. Pre-School Targeted Performances

Productions primarily designed for pre-school audiences, regardless of venue scale.

5. Character Shows without Narrative Structure

IP-based performances centered on character appearances or episodic segments without a coherent dramatic arc.

6. Film-Dominant Presentations

Screenings or film-based presentations where cinematic content, rather than live performance, carries the narrative.

7. Condensed or Partial Versions

Highlight concerts, excerpt-based performances, or abridged versions of full productions.

Final Note

This framework is designed to function as a consistent and reproducible filtering system for analyzing the structure and evolution of Korean musical theatre. By combining scale, authorship, and performance structure as core criteria, the archive aims to capture works that meaningfully reflect the industry's creative and production dynamics.
