SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set in 6th-century Britain during a time of chaos and invasion, the musical unfolds across fragmented kingdoms, where prophecy and power shape the fate of a future king.

Merlin, a druid priest and prophet, seeks to end the violent rule of King Uther Pendragon and establish a new order. Arthur, raised as an ordinary man unaware of his royal lineage, lives peacefully with his adoptive father Ector and his companion Lancelot.

Upon learning of his true origins, Arthur pulls the sacred sword Excalibur from the stone and ascends to the throne. As king, he faces internal division, external threats from the Saxons, and personal turmoil. His relationship with Guinevere and Lancelot evolves into a tragic love triangle, further complicating his rule.

Meanwhile, Morgana, Arthur’s half-sister, driven by resentment and revenge, manipulates forces to challenge his authority. As war intensifies, Arthur must confront both political enemies and personal loss.

The story culminates in a final battle against invading forces, where Arthur overcomes chaos and emerges as a true leader, embodying both the burden and responsibility of kingship.

PRODUCTION NOTE

Xcalibur premiered in 2019 at the Sejong Center Grand Theater, produced by EMK Musical Company with music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Robin Lerner, and book by Ivan Menchell.

Originally developed from the Swiss musical Artus-Excalibur (2014), the Korean production was extensively reworked, incorporating new songs, revised structure, and localized dramatic elements to create a distinct Korean original. It is EMK’s third original musical following Mata Hari and The Man Who Laughs.

The production gained attention for its blockbuster scale, advanced stage technology, and strong commercial performance, later returning for multiple revivals and expanding internationally through showcases and licensed productions.
