小王子

Le Petit Prince (어린 왕자) is a Korean original musical adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s novella, reimagined with live music, poetic narration, and a childlike philosophical tone. The show was licensed for a full Mandarin-language production in Taiwan, marking its first overseas staging and extending its cross-cultural life beyond its Daehakro origins.

ORIGIN

2018, book and lyrics by Seong Jae-hyun, music by Damiro, produced by HJ Culture, premiered at Chungmu Art Center Black in Seoul. Developed as a small-cast, music-driven piece centered on the relationship between the Pilot and the Prince, combining a chamber score, hand-drawn visual motifs, and text-based storytelling. Received strong audience response for its emotional fidelity to the original novel and has since become one of HJ Culture’s steady repertory titles.

STORY

After crash-landing in the desert, a weary aviator meets a mysterious boy from a distant asteroid, B612. Through stories of his rose, the fox, and the strange adults he met on other planets, the Prince teaches the Pilot that “what is essential is invisible to the eye.” The musical follows their brief friendship and inevitable parting, blending narration and song to explore memory, loss, and the rediscovery of childlike wonder.

GLOBAL STAGINGS & ADAPTATIONS

Taiwan – Taipei (2022)
Licensed adaptation – Mandarin-language premiere by C MUSICAL and HJ Culture
Presented in October 2022 with support from udnFunLife and the National Culture and Arts Foundation. The production introduced a full Mandarin translation and a Taiwanese cast while retaining the original Korean score and staging concept. Publicity highlighted the work as a faithful adaptation of the Korean hit, which had passed 100 performances domestically.

Taiwan – Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung (2023–2024)
Licensed revival – second-season Mandarin production with expanded touring
Restaged with new principal casting and extended performance dates across three major cities. Directed by the same creative team but visually reinterpreted for larger venues, the revival positioned the musical as an active Korean-origin franchise in Taiwan, reinforcing its sustained marketability.
