The Troll’s Child (트롤의 아이) is a Korean original family musical based on Selma Lagerlöf’s short story, exploring adoption, difference, and chosen family through Nordic troll mythology. The work later became a Vietnam–Korea co-produced staging in 2023 as part of an official cultural exchange program.

ORIGIN
2021, writer Kim Bami, composer Kim Haesung, director Son Jieun, produced by SangsangMaru, premiered at Seongnam Arts Center Ensemble Theater. Developed from Lagerlöf’s source text into a 70-minute children’s musical using live music and fairytale staging.
STORY
A troll couple living deep in the forest discovers a lost human baby and decides to raise her in secret. As the child grows, the family faces hostility from the troll community and must confront fear, prejudice, and belonging. The musical follows their journey from mistrust to acceptance, emphasizing empathy, family beyond blood, and the value of life. The tone blends gentle humor, fairy-tale fantasy, and emotional sincerity for young audiences.

GLOBAL STAGINGS & ADAPTATIONS
Vietnam, 2022–2023
Co-production – Vietnamese-language staging with Youth Theatre of Vietnam (Nhà hát Tuổi trẻ)
Presented in Hanoi in August 2023 as part of the 30th anniversary of Vietnam–Korea diplomatic relations, supported by both national Ministries of Culture. Korean creative team collaborated with a full Vietnamese cast, adapting the work for local audiences with educational events and outreach programs.
