三つの風と一本の木
Anarchist (아나키스트) is a Korean original musical that follows three young men drawn into a “righteous bank robbery” and the independence movement in 1930s China. In 2025 it was introduced to Japanese industry and audiences under the title Three Winds and One Tree (三つの風と一本の木) at the 2025 K-Musical Roadshow in TOKYO.
ORIGIN
Anarchist (아나키스트) is a new Korean musical written by An Rijun, composed by Heo Suhyeon, and directed by Kim Taehyung, produced by MBZ Company. The premiere run took place at Link Arts Center Dream, Dream 3 Hall in Daehangno, Seoul, from 14 January to 6 April 2025. Developed as MBZ Company’s first original musical, the show aimed to depict the independence movement not through famous historical heroes but through ordinary youth whose personal choices reshape history. In June 2025 it was selected for the Producers’ Pitching section of the K-Musical Market, where it was presented to overseas producers as a candidate for Asian expansion.
STORY
Set in 1930s Beijing and Shanghai, the musical centers on Mu-hyeok, an orphaned cart driver whose only companion is his battered cargo bicycle. His life changes when he meets Deok-hyeong, a former pickpocket, and Ja-gyeong, an idealistic intellectual interested in the independence movement. Together they form a small “revolutionary group” and plot a daring raid on a Japanese bank, treating robbery as a righteous act to fund the anti-colonial struggle. As their scheme succeeds and their activities move to Shanghai, friendship, loyalty, and conflicting ideals begin to pull the three men in different directions. Against the backdrop of Japanese imperial expansion, the story explores what kind of “anarchist” one can be when the cost of freedom is sacrifice, and whether the utopia they seek can exist beyond their own hearts.
