ナルチスとゴルトムント~知と愛
Narcissus and Goldmund (나르치스와 골드문트) is a Korean original chamber musical based on Hermann Hesse’s novel, following two men whose lives diverge between contemplative faith and instinctive freedom. Its German-language showcase in Berlin, licensed staging in Shanghai, and participation in the 2025 K-Musical Roadshow in Tokyo marked its early international expansion.
ORIGIN
The musical premiered in Seoul in 2022, created by writer-director Youn Sangwon and composer–music director Yoo Hannah for SUMNAVI. Adapting Hesse’s 1930 novel into a two-hander, the production framed Narcissus as Apollonian and Goldmund as Dionysian, turning philosophical dualities into theatrical imagery. Strong audience response positioned the work as a notable literary adaptation in the Korean small-theatre scene.
STORY
At Mariabronn Abbey, Goldmund is left in the monastery by his father, where the young monk Narcissus immediately recognizes the conflict within him. As Goldmund wrestles with monastic life, Narcissus urges him to discover his own path. Their lives then diverge—one toward contemplation, the other toward wandering, art, and sensual experience—yet their bond continues to shape their choices. The musical follows their recurring encounters at the crossroads of life and death, mind and instinct.
