Q:
What is the mechanism behind the travelator (moving staircase)?
A:
Motorized linked steps on a track
🎭 In The Phantom of the Opera, the travelator — most iconic in Christine’s descent to the lair — is built from rigid step panels linked on a hidden motorized track, moving smoothly and silently at a diagonal incline rather than like a simple conveyor or escalator. A Busan backstage video showed each step as a separate panel with a zigzag underside for reinforcement and tracking.
🎶 This design lets performers appear to walk deep underground while staying at stage level, perfectly timed with music, fog, and lighting. Because of its complexity and cost, the travelator is rare in musical theatre and stands as one of Phantom’s signature technical marvels.
