SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set between a celestial realm and earthly Joseon society, the musical unfolds as a Buddhist disciple and eight heavenly maidens are punished and reborn into the human world, where their fate intersects with the miser Onggojip.

After offending the monk-master Hakdaesa, Jiseong and the eight maidens descend into mortal life. Jiseong is reborn into the world surrounding Onggojip and his eight daughters, while the miser’s greed and arrogance provoke supernatural retribution.

When a mysterious double of Onggojip appears, confusion erupts as no one can distinguish the real from the false. Through escalating comic trials, mistaken identity, and social chaos, Onggojip is humiliated and ultimately transformed through repentance.

Reworking Onggojipjeon with added Buddhist cosmology and theatrical playfulness, the musical explores truth and illusion, false self and true self, through satire, music, and communal festivity.

PRODUCTION NOTE

Produced by the 88 Seoul Arts Company with direction by Pyo Jae-soon and music by Jeong Seong-jo, the musical reinterpreted Onggojipjeon while incorporating elements from Guunmong and ideas of karma and reincarnation. Contemporary commentary described it as exploring a new middle ground between Western musical drama and Korean traditional folk performance.
