SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set in the 1970s, the musical unfolds in Korea, where a young medical student is drawn into a tragic spiral of love, identity, and downfall.

Minwoo, a promising and pure-hearted student, falls in love with Da-hye after a chance encounter on campus. Their relationship blossoms into a sincere first love, supported by his close friend Hyun-tae.

However, Minwoo’s life collapses when he faces his father’s death and the shocking truth about his birth. As a series of misfortunes unfolds, he disappears and drifts into a darker world.

Da-hye continues to wait for him, while Hyun-tae remains by her side, eventually forming a different kind of bond. Meanwhile, Minwoo becomes entangled in crime and self-destruction, unable to escape his fate.

Despite moments of reunion, the three characters are ultimately driven apart by circumstance and emotional distance. In the end, Minwoo meets a tragic death, and the story closes with a reflection on lost youth, love, and irreversible destiny.

PRODUCTION NOTE

Based on Choi In-ho’s bestselling novel, the musical premiered in 1997 as a commemorative production for the 10th anniversary of Seoul Arts Center. The original work had already been widely adapted into film and television, making it a prominent example of early Korean “one source multi use” storytelling. The musical achieved both commercial success and critical acclaim, attracting approximately 50,000 audience members and winning four major awards at the Korean Musical Awards. It was later revived in 2005 and again in 2023, each time with updated staging, music, and production design while preserving the emotional core of the original story.
