SYNOPSIS
(Partial Synopsis)
Set in the Joseon Dynasty royal court, the musical unfolds around Jang-geum’s journey from a lowly palace servant to a respected royal physician, navigating power, rivalry, and personal growth.
Jang-geum begins her life in the royal kitchen, where she faces strict hierarchies and fierce competition. Through determination and talent, she gradually rises despite conspiracies and injustices that threaten her position.
Alongside her professional journey, the story explores emotional relationships—most notably her bond with Min Jung-ho, whose unwavering support contrasts with the complicated, one-sided love of Geum-young. Even King Jungjong is depicted as a figure capable of deep personal affection.
The musical emphasizes both Jang-geum’s resilience and the emotional lives of surrounding characters, reinterpreting the familiar narrative with heightened dramatic focus on love, ambition, and sacrifice.
PRODUCTION NOTE
Jewel in the Palace was produced by PMC Production, adapting the widely popular television drama into a large-scale stage production. With music by Cho Sung-woo, the show combined traditional Korean instruments with Western orchestration, aiming to extend the Korean Wave globally through musical theatre. The production featured significant investment and elaborate staging, including palace settings and traditional dance elements.
