SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set in a mythical underwater world, the musical unfolds in the deep-sea kingdom of Okakeomare, where love, vengeance, and destiny collide.

Princess Turandot, hardened by the brutal death of her mother, vows never to love. To protect herself, she imposes a deadly trial: any suitor must solve her riddles or face execution. Many have failed, and their deaths have become a ritualized spectacle.

On the day of another execution, Prince Calaf arrives and becomes captivated by Turandot’s beauty. Despite warnings from his father Timur and the slave girl Liu, he challenges the princess and confronts the riddles.

As Calaf faces supernatural forces and the spirits guarding the riddles, he persists through courage and determination. Meanwhile, Turandot’s rigid worldview begins to fracture as she encounters a love that cannot be easily dismissed.

Ultimately, through sacrifice and emotional transformation, Turandot is confronted with the possibility of love, and the story resolves as a journey from vengeance to human connection.

PRODUCTION NOTE

Developed through the Daegu International Musical Festival, the musical reinterprets the classic opera into a wholly original narrative set in an underwater fantasy world. Co-produced by local cultural institutions, it represents a major regional project aimed at global expansion. The work has been exported internationally, including licensed productions in Eastern Europe, and is notable for its stylized choreography, large-scale staging, and fusion of Asian musical aesthetics.
