SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set in early 19th-century Europe during the Napoleonic Wars, the musical unfolds across battlefields, Geneva, and the Arctic, where a scientist’s obsession with creating life leads to irreversible tragedy.

Victor Frankenstein, a scientist driven by trauma and ambition, begins experiments to create an immortal being. During the war, he meets Henri, a compassionate doctor who eventually joins his research despite moral hesitation. After a fatal incident, Henri is executed while protecting Victor.

Consumed by guilt and obsession, Victor uses Henri’s body to complete his experiment and succeeds in creating life. However, the creature escapes and experiences rejection, violence, and betrayal in human society.

Years later, the creature returns to confront Victor, recounting its suffering and declaring revenge. One by one, those close to Victor are destroyed, leaving him completely isolated.

The conflict culminates in the Arctic, where Victor and the creature engage in a final confrontation. Both are fatally wounded. The creature dies after achieving its revenge, and Victor is left alone, facing the consequences of his actions in total despair.

PRODUCTION NOTE

Frankenstein was created as a Korean original musical to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Chungmu Arts Center. Written and directed by Wang Yong-bum with music by Lee Sung-joon, it premiered in 2014. The production is notable for its large-scale staging and dual-role casting system, where principal actors perform multiple characters.

The musical significantly reinterprets Mary Shelley’s original narrative, emphasizing psychological conflict, ethics, and human desire. It achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, winning multiple major awards and establishing itself as a representative Korean grand musical.

Initially produced by a public arts institution, later productions transitioned to commercial producers, including EMK Musical Company. The work expanded internationally through licensed productions, particularly in Japan.
