SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set in 1930s Gyeongseong under Japanese colonial rule, the musical unfolds through letters and memory, where a young writer becomes entangled in a fictional identity that takes on a life of its own.
Sehoon, an aspiring writer, encounters a situation involving a novel attributed to Hikaru, believed to be a deceased female writer. Seeking to prevent its publication, he approaches fellow writer Lee Yoon, triggering a return to past events.
In the past, Sehoon joins a literary circle of young writers struggling under colonial censorship. There, he assists the group while secretly writing letters under the name Hikaru to encourage the ill writer Haejin.
As the correspondence deepens, Hikaru evolves into an independent presence within Sehoon’s mind, expressing thoughts and desires beyond his control. Haejin, unaware of the truth, develops emotional attachment through the letters.
Sehoon’s internal conflict intensifies as deception, artistic ambition, and emotional attachment collide. When the truth is eventually revealed, relationships collapse, and the illusion of Hikaru disappears.
Returning to the present, Sehoon confronts the consequences of his actions. Through loss and reflection, he ultimately continues writing, preserving the memory of those he loved and the words that defined them.
PRODUCTION NOTE
Fan Letter premiered in 2016, produced by LIVE Corp as part of a government-supported creator development program. Inspired by figures such as Yi Sang and Kim Yu-jeong, the work fictionalizes the literary milieu of 1930s Korea.
The musical is notable for its chamber-scale structure, focusing on letters, dialogue, and psychological development rather than spectacle. Its noir-inspired staging and lyrical score emphasize emotional subtlety and literary themes.
It has become one of the most internationally successful Korean original musicals, with licensed productions in Taiwan, China, and Japan, as well as a showcase in London.
