SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set from the late 1970s to the early 1990s in South Korea, the musical unfolds against a backdrop of political upheaval, where three young individuals struggle to define their lives amid historical turbulence.
The story begins with Tae-su, a former gangster, standing trial, prosecuted by his longtime friend Woo-seok. As Woo-seok questions how their lives came to diverge so drastically, the narrative shifts back to their youth.
In 1976, Tae-su, Woo-seok, and Hye-rin meet under tense circumstances shaped by student protests and state repression. Despite their differences—Tae-su as a rough outsider, Woo-seok as an aspiring prosecutor, and Hye-rin as a woman caught between privilege and rebellion—they form a deep bond of friendship and love.
As they grow older, each follows a different path shaped by both personal choices and historical forces. Woo-seok pursues justice within the legal system, becoming a principled prosecutor. Tae-su enters the underworld, eventually rising within organized crime and the casino business. Hye-rin, the daughter of a powerful casino magnate, struggles to break free from the constraints of her background while navigating her feelings for both men.
Their lives intersect with major historical events, including authoritarian rule, democratization movements, and social unrest. These events test their beliefs, loyalties, and relationships, pushing them toward irreversible decisions.
Ultimately, the story culminates in tragedy and reflection, as the characters confront the consequences of their choices and the forces of their time. Through their intertwined destinies, the musical portrays the cost of living through a turbulent era and the enduring question of how individuals shape—and are shaped by—history.
PRODUCTION NOTE
Sandglass is based on the 1995 SBS television drama of the same name, widely regarded as one of Korea’s most influential series. The 2017 musical adaptation condenses the original 24-episode narrative into a stage format, focusing on the central relationships among Tae-su, Woo-seok, and Hye-rin while incorporating key historical events.
The 2022 revival, although produced by the same company and based on the same source material, was extensively reworked. With new creative leadership, the script, score, characters, and overall dramaturgy were substantially revised, making it effectively a distinct reinterpretation rather than a conventional revival.
