風月主
Master of the Wind and Moon (풍월주) is a Korean original musical loosely based on the historical term pungwolju, premiering in 2012 and revived multiple times through 2021. The show was exported to Japan in 2013 under the title Fugetsushu, staged with Korean actors at Amuse Musical Theatre in Tokyo.
ORIGIN
2012, produced by CJ E&M at Petitzel Theater, Seoul. Written by Jeong Min-a with music by Park Ki-hong. Although inspired by the concept of Pungwolju in Silla history, the musical is largely fictional, centering on tragic romance and court politics rather than historical accuracy. The work developed a strong fandom for its emotional ballads and star-driven casting, leading to repeated revivals in 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2021.
STORY
Set in the Silla dynasty, the musical follows Yeol, the most popular male courtesan of Unru, and his closest companion Saddam. Queen Jinseong becomes enamored with Yeol and demands that he enter the palace, but he refuses, choosing loyalty to Saddam. Interpreting this rejection as jealousy, the queen orders Saddam to die, leading to a tragic chain of sacrifice, misunderstanding, and death. The musical centers on forbidden love, class hierarchy, and the futility of power in the face of personal devotion.
