公主的盛宴

Princess’s Feast (공주의 만찬) is a Korea–China joint musical performance produced by CJ E&M and a Chinese cultural-ministry partnered company, premiering in Shanghai in 2013 and combining Chinese culinary culture with musical spectacle. The production is notable as an early model of Korean–Chinese co-production in the musical theatre sector.

ORIGIN

2013 – Co-produced by CJ E&M (South Korea) and AJU Yunchang (Shanghai) Culture Development Ltd, a joint venture with China’s Ministry of Culture. Directed by Liu Chun, with Korean composers and designers (e.g., Park Jung-ah, Kim Tae-young) working alongside Chinese creators. The show premiered on 9 October 2013 at Gongwu Theatre (共舞台), Shanghai, and was designed as a large-scale spectacle blending Chinese tradition and modern musical performance.

STORY

In an imperial Chinese court, a princess has lost her sense of taste and a contest is held among international chefs to restore it. The show melds Chinese culinary heritage with dramatic performance, featuring traditional Chinese cooking motifs, modern music, beat-boxing, breaking, opera and stunts. It emphasises sensory experiences (taste, smell, sight, sound) and is theatrical in tone—fun, colourful, immersive—with a global cast and cross-cultural production design.

KOREAN RUNS

No full Korean domestic production prior to the China premiere is widely documented. The show was developed by a Korean company and Korean creative team, but the main premiere was in China. Therefore the “domestic run” is limited; production announcement took place in Korea in mid-2013 by CJ E&M.
