與神同行:地獄篇

Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (신과 함께) is a Korean original musical based on Joo Ho-min’s hit webtoon, created before the blockbuster film series and considered one of Korea’s most notable myth-based stage works. While it has not yet been licensed for full overseas production, it was formally introduced to the Chinese market through the 2018 K-Musical Roadshow in Shanghai, positioning it as a potential future export title.

ORIGIN

2015 (Seoul). Created by playwright Jung Young, composer Jo Yoon-jung (2015) and Park Sung-il (from 2017), with lyrics and book by Sung Jae-joon. Produced by the Seoul Performing Arts Company (SPAC) and premiered at the CJ Towol Theater, Seoul Arts Center. Developed independently of the later 2017 live-action films, the musical established its own narrative and staging style rooted in Korean afterlife cosmology.

STORY

The musical follows Kim Ja-hong, an ordinary man who dies suddenly and must stand trial in the afterlife within forty-nine days, passing through seven courts of hell. He is defended by Jin Gi-han, a public counsel determined to pursue justice for souls who were powerless in life. Meanwhile, Gang-rim, the leader of the three afterlife guardians, tracks a vengeful spirit who escaped judgment, forcing him to break the rule that bans interference in the human world. As the trials unfold, Ja-hong’s hidden past is exposed, testing the balance between punishment and compassion. The work blends courtroom drama, fantasy action, and reflections on guilt, duty, and redemption.
