ORIGIN

Premiered in 2023 at Gwanak Art Hall, produced by the Gwanak Cultural Foundation with direction by Seo Jae-hyung, book and lyrics by Han A-reum, and music by Taiwanese composer Chang Hsin-Tzu.

Developed not as a commercial Daehakro production but as a public-supported project, reflecting a recent Korean trend in which government-funded cultural institutions commission new works and collaborate with foreign creatives from the development stage.

STORY

Based on Sophocles’ tragedy, the musical follows Oedipus as he confronts the truth about his identity, the prophecy surrounding his fate, and the catastrophic consequences of trying to escape destiny. The production uses an ensemble-as-chorus staging style, emphasizing ritual movement and collective narration rather than individual character focus. The tone combines classical tragedy with contemporary musical language, performed with a modern score rooted in choral textures and percussive rhythm.

Korean-language festival run with Chinese surtitles – New Taipei City Musical Festival
Performed October 2023 at New Taipei City Arts Center as part of the “C MUSICAL” invited program, presented by C MUSICAL 제작 and Sincere LAB. The production was marketed as an immersive reinterpretation of Greek tragedy, receiving positive audience responses for its physical staging and vocal ensemble work. Local arts press noted the rarity of a Korean original musical (not a K-pop-based production) being introduced to Taiwan through a public cultural exchange format.
