神が僕を創る時
When God Made Me (신이 나를 만들 때) is a Korean original musical set in a celestial workshop where “God” assembles human lives from selectable traits, blending comedy and social commentary about fate, privilege, and self-worth. The show premiered in Seoul in 2023 and received a licensed Japanese production in 2024 under the title 神が僕を創る時.
ORIGIN
Premiered in 2023, produced by The Best Play (연극열전). Developed through the 2022 Storyum selection program for new Korean works. Written by Won Chae-young with music by Ko Hyun-jung, the musical uses a fantasy premise—a divine “cloud server” where humans are manufactured—to explore inequality, resentment, and questions of identity through a pop-rock score and four-character chamber staging.
STORY
In the heavenly production site “Cloud,” God routinely combines ingredients such as wealth, appearance, health, and lifespan to manufacture humans. One day, a man named Aksang appears, demanding a refund for his life, claiming that his ingredients were unfairly assigned. After a heated argument, it is revealed that Aksang’s intended life materials were mistakenly given to another person, Hosang, who is now living an easy, fortunate life. God declares that the only way to “refund” Aksang’s life is to wait for Hosang to die—something expected to take 50 more years. Aksang then sets out on a desperate, comedic quest to reclaim the life he believes he was owed. The show asks whether a meaningful life comes from design, luck, or self-acceptance.
