The Last Man (더 라스트맨) is a Korean solo musical set in a zombie apocalypse, following an unnamed survivor who barricades himself in bunker B-103 for a year. ORIGIN

The Last Man began as an original Korean web musical, developed through the Seoul Performing Arts Company and Naver “Youth Artist Web Musical Creation Contest,” where it received the grand prize and was first released online as a short-form series. It was later adapted for the stage by NEO Inc. and The Wave as a one-person musical, an unusual format in the commercial musical market. After a reading performance in 2021, the piece was reworked for a full black-box staging, emphasizing live band sound, immersive sound design, and the psychological arc of a single character.

STORY

One day, an unknown zombie virus spreads across Korea, rapidly wiping out the human population until only one survivor remains. Anticipating disaster, he has stocked bunker B-103 with food and water for a year and barricades himself inside, determined to outlast the zombies outside. As time passes, the clear line between “zombies” and “other people” begins to blur, and the bunker becomes both a refuge and a prison. Through songs, video messages, and conversations with a single puppet companion, the survivor grapples with loneliness, fear, and the question of whether he can ever open the door again. The musical balances dark humor with psychological suspense, leaving the ending open to interpretation.

GLOBAL STAGINGS & ADAPTATIONS

Taiwan, 2024
Showcase – 2024 K-Musical Roadshow in Taipei, TPAC Blue Box (Taipei Performing Arts Center)
In November 2024, The Last Man was introduced to Taiwanese audiences as a 20–25 minute highlight showcase at the K-Musical Roadshow in Taipei. Performed in Korean with Chinese surtitles, the piece was presented alongside four other Korean originals, offering a curated glimpse of its one-person zombie-apocalypse narrative and bunker staging. Industry forums and post-show talks framed the musical as a genre piece that combines K-style horror imagery with an intimate character study. The showcase strengthened ties between Korean producers and Taiwanese presenters and helped pave the way for subsequent licensing discussions.

China, 2025
Licensed adaptation – Mandarin-language solo musical The Last Man (存在者), Shanghai Grand Theatre
In August 2025, a Mandarin-language adaptation titled THE LAST MAN存在者 opened at the Shanghai Grand Theatre’s middle theatre, produced by Muxike Musical (缪时客音乐剧) under license from the Korean rights-holders. The production reframed the story as an existential survival drama, with the protagonist referred to simply as “the Existent” and accompanied on stage by a single custom-designed puppet. Integrating live-stream technology, the show used eight small screens to broadcast real-time footage captured by the performer’s phone, allowing both in-theatre and online audiences to share the bunker’s confined perspective. Positioned as a tenth-anniversary project for the Chinese producer, the Shanghai run announced plans for future mid- and small-theatre versions, signaling The Last Man’s continued life in the Chinese-language market.
