Jae Woo Lee is a Korean-born Korean-American tenor and stage actor who was part of the earliest documented generation of Korean performers in Broadway musicals. Born in Seoul, Lee studied voice at Seoul National University and moved to the United States in 1967. He made his Broadway musical debut in the original production of Pacific Overtures, beginning with previews in 1975, playing the Fisherman, Sumo Wrestler, and Lord of the South while understudying the Reciter. Lee continued with the production on its 1976 West Coast tour and subsequently appeared in Broadway and touring revivals of The King and I, principally as the Interpreter and as an understudy and later replacement for the Kralahome. These recurring engagements document continued Korean participation in major American musical productions after Pacific Overtures.
