Summary
On his 40th birthday, a lonely music teacher confronts years of sacrifice and resentment with his younger brother. An unexpected visitor helps them face old wounds and rediscover their bond.
Origin & Development
Premiered in 1995 at a small theatre in Daehakro, Between Raindrops (Korean title: 사랑은 비를 타고, also nicknamed “사비타”) was written by Oh Eun-hee, with music by Choi Gip-seop. The show was initially developed as an intimate, actor-driven piece built around only three characters and a live piano onstage, which helped it sustain long repeat runs and ease recasting.
Its accessible themes of family reconciliation and everyday emotional humor contributed to its steady life in the Korean repertoire. It quickly became a repertory staple in Daehakro, eventually surpassing 2,600 performances. The show has been periodically revived by multiple producers, including long open-run formats in the 2000s and 2010s. Major anniversaries have been marked with refreshed stagings, including the 20th-anniversary production in 2015 and the 30th-anniversary revival in 2025 at Baekam Art Hall in Seoul.
Partial Synopsis
The musical centers on two estranged brothers, Dong-wook and Dong-hyun, who reunite after seven years of silence on the elder brother’s birthday. Their awkward attempts at conversation are interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Yoo Mi-ri, a cheerful event-planner who mistakes their home for a newlywed celebration venue. Through a mix of comic misunderstandings and quiet confessions, the characters confront long-held regrets, reshaping their relationships as the rain outside gradually clears. The tone is intimate, lightly sentimental, and driven by piano-based songs.
