Summary

A jukebox musical built from the songs of Dongmulwon and Kim Kwang-seok, recalling youth, friendship, and artistic dreams in late-1980s Korea.

Origin & Development

The musical was first produced in 2015 as 그 여름, 동물원 (literally “That Summer, Zoo”), developed as an original Korean jukebox musical using songs by Kim Kwang-seok and the band Dongmulwon. It premiered at Dongsung Art Center in Seoul and was produced by The Group. The work later underwent revisions and was retitled 다시, 동물원 (Again, Zoo), continuing its life as a repertory production reflecting generational memory and Korean folk-pop history. 2015 – Premiere at Dongsung Art Center, produced by The Group. Subsequent runs at KEPCO Arts Center from 2016 to 2018 with revised casting and musical arrangements.

Revived under the title Dasi, Dongmulwon at Dongduk Women’s University Performing Arts Center in 2023. Continued Korean run confirmed for 2025, indicating long-term repertory viability.

Partial Synopsis

Set around the formation and early years of the band Dongmulwon, the musical follows a group of young musicians navigating friendship, artistic ideals, and diverging life paths. Framed through memory and reflection, the story juxtaposes youthful ambition with later-life regret and nostalgia. Well-known songs such as “Hyehwadong (혜화동),” “변해가네 (Changing),” and “Writing a Letter on a Cloudy Autumn Sky (흐린 가을 하늘에 편지를 써)” are woven into the narrative, emphasizing emotional resonance over plot-driven conflict. The tone is lyrical and reflective, blending live music performance with dramatic recollection.
