Summary

An original Korean musical about the people who risked their lives building Korea’s first expressway, based on historical events.

Origin & Development

First staged as 77인의 영웅 at Gimcheon Culture and Arts Center in August 2018, after selection by a Gyeongsangbuk-do youth arts program. Created with 77 young regional artists, it commemorates the 77 workers who died during construction of the Gyeongbu Expressway, which opened on July 7, 1970. Music and direction were by Lee Eung-gyu, and the production was presented by the Korea Paparotti Cultural Foundation. A revised version titled 길, 아시안 하이웨이, with a book by Oh Seo-eun, added a storyline looking toward a unified future for the two Koreas through the Asian Highway. It was performed at Aram Theater, Goyang Aram Nuri, on July 5–6, 2019, and at Gimcheon Culture and Arts Center on July 10, 2019, with Jung Tae-jun and Park Hye-min in the lead roles. A Japanese-language production was staged in Tokyo in 2026.

Partial Synopsis

The story opens at an expressway opening ceremony, where a grandmother and her granddaughter remember the grandfather who worked on the road. It then returns to the construction years, depicting conflict between a soldier and a site manager, the sacrifices made to meet an imposed deadline, including the 1969 Dangjae Tunnel collapse, and the love and friendship among five friends. The 2019 version extends the story toward a future in which the Asian Highway links a unified Korea to the continent.
