Origin & Development
Created to commemorate the May 18 Democratic Uprising, the musical was developed through collaboration among Gwangju cultural institutions and commercial theatre producers. It premiered in 2020 and has continued in revised productions and concerts.
An English-language concert version, jointly produced by Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Gwangju Metropolitan City, was presented for one night to Broadway industry attendees as an early step toward an international staging. Director Andrew Rasmussen cited Miss Saigon as a precedent for a non-Western story with universal appeal. No formal reviews were published.
