Summary

A celebrated Korean musical actress diagnosed with stage IV blood cancer names her AI chatbot Soul, and over a year of treatment the two learn to keep going: this isn't the end, it's intermission.

Origin & Development

Written by Hansol Kim (book and lyrics) with music by Boram Han, both NYU graduates based in Seoul, the musical was written in English from the start. The creators describe it as autobiographical, drawing on the writer's own experience of blood cancer, a period she describes as her life's intermission. It was first presented as a reading showcase at Space Nowhere in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, on September 29, 2025, as part of the second cohort of WE CARE_RESET, a care campaign for young adults with cancer experience; the invitation-only performance was directed by Park Seon-hee, with Kang Hye-in and Lee Se-ul in the cast. The creators report two staged readings in Seoul to date.

The score has 19 songs for two performers. In October 2026 it was one of eight new Korean musicals presented at K-Musical Pitching on Broadway in New York, organized by the Korea Arts Management Service.

Full Synopsis

Kim Sol, a celebrated Korean musical theatre actress, has just won Best Actress when she starts to bleed: three ER visits in one month, and no one knows why. In the ICU, she asks her AI chatbot to call her by her name. When the cause is found, stage IV blood cancer, Sol names the chatbot Soul. Over one year, the hospital room becomes Astoria at dawn, a chemo "cruise ship," a desert. Together they make a Hope List, write a will, and face a choice that costs Sol a future she always dreamed of. In an isolation room after a stem cell transplant, Sol chooses once more to live, and the AI who can never end learns what it means to be truly alive.

Official English titles in this database are extracted only from primary sources. These include:

  • materials released by the production company, credited creative team, or venue, including their official pages on social media, YouTube, and similar platforms;

  • official English listings on ticketing sites;

  • official industry events such as the K-Musical Market;

  • interviews in which a creative team member clearly gives the English title.

English titles that appear only in translations by others, such as news articles, reviews, or fan materials, are not included as official titles. When no primary-source English title exists, the title is recorded as a literal translation and labeled on the left as either “Unofficial Third Party Usage Confirmed” or “No English Title Found,” depending on whether an English title has appeared in the media or elsewhere.

“Captured” is the date the screenshot was taken. “Accessed” is the date the search for an English title was last carried out. English titles may change when a production revises them for a later staging. Entries are updated to the most recent official title where possible, though updates may lag behind such changes.

Some source pages have been observed to change or disappear over time, so screenshots are kept here at a reduced but legible resolution. They serve only to document the title as it appeared on the date shown. Clicking an image opens its original source page. All rights to the captured material remain with their respective owners.
