Summary
A Korean original musical about Ludwig van Beethoven that blends factual biography with fiction to explore hearing loss, artistic will, and imperfect love.
Origin & Development
Produced by Orchard Musical Company, the piece premiered in 2018 as a small-cast, music-driven work that places two pianos at the center of its stage language. It traces Beethoven across childhood, youth, and later years, but it is not a strict biographical musical; it is a “faction” built around letters, the Heiligenstadt Testament, and the composer’s inner voice. The score folds Beethoven motifs into original numbers, performed live to keep the music’s presence immediate. 2018 – Premiere, Orchard Musical Company, JTN Art Hall 1, Seoul (2018.11.27 \\\~ 2019.01.27). 2019 – Second season, Orchard Musical Company, Dream Art Center 1 (2019.04.09 \\\~ 2019.06.30).
2020 – Third season, Orchard Musical Company, Daehakro TOM 1 (2020.06.30 \\\~ 2020.09.27). 2022–2023 – Fourth season, Orchard Musical Company, YES24 Stage 1 (2022.12.20 \\\~ 2023.03.12.). The title recurs in Korea with new casts and refinements to orchestration and staging while retaining live piano as a core device.
Full Synopsis
At the time of Beethoven’s death, a young man arrives at a convent carrying the composer’s final letter. He gives it to an elderly nun named Marie, who asks him to play the piano while she reads. As the music begins, Beethoven’s life unfolds through memories of the suffering that shaped him.
As a child, Beethoven is subjected to relentless abuse by his father, who forces him to practise in pursuit of musical success. He gains recognition in Vienna but remains haunted by comparisons with Mozart and by the conviction that he can never satisfy his father’s expectations.
His success brings another ordeal when he gradually loses his hearing. During this period, Marie introduces him to Walter, a gifted boy whom she hopes Beethoven will teach. Consumed by fear and anger over his condition, Beethoven rejects him. Walter leaves for England but dies in a shipwreck, leaving Beethoven burdened by guilt.
Hoping to redeem himself, Beethoven takes responsibility for his nephew Karl and attempts to shape him into a pianist. His severe discipline, however, repeats the coercion Beethoven experienced in childhood. Unable to endure a future chosen for him, Karl rebels and leaves to become a soldier.
When Marie finishes reading the letter, she turns to the young pianist who has accompanied Beethoven’s memories and asks his name. He identifies himself as Franz Schubert, suggesting that although Beethoven’s life has ended, his music and influence will continue through those who follow him.
