Summary
Independence leader Ahn Chang Ho builds communities across Korea and the United States, sustaining education, civic responsibility, and hope through exile and struggle.
Origin & Development
Musical Dosan was collaboratively developed by Korean-American artists in Southern California. It dramatizes the life and ideals of independence leader Dosan Ahn Chang-ho (1878–1938) through the history of the Korean diaspora in the United States. Ahn was a founding leader of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in 1919, wrote the lyrics to Korea's original national anthem, and led reform movements in education and civic life in Korea and in overseas communities; in California he established schools, civic organizations, and resistance networks.
The musical was conceived to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement and the establishment of Dosan Ahn Chang Ho Day on November 9, proclaimed by the State of California. It premiered in Riverside and Los Angeles in 2019, with performances at Loma Linda University, the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles, and the Wilshire Ebell Theatre. A six-performance run at La Mirada Theatre attracted more than 5,000 attendees, and the production returned to the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in 2024.
Performed in English and Korean, the musical dramatizes key episodes from Dosan's life: a solo prologue, his public speeches, his family's migration to the U.S., his confrontation with Itō Hirobumi, and the March 1st demonstrations, closing with the cast singing the early version of the Korean national anthem. According to its program materials, the show aims to portray Korea's modern awakening through narrative, music, and dance for both diaspora communities and younger generations.
In 2025, marking its fifth anniversary, the work had its Korean premiere as a full opera at the Seoul Arts Center Opera House, reinterpreted by Korean performers. It is a rare case of a Korean musical developed overseas before being presented in Korea.
