Summary

King Oedipus searches for the cause of a plague, only to discover that the murderer he seeks and the prophecy he tried to escape are bound to his own identity.

Origin & Development

Premiered in 2023 at Gwanak Art Hall, Oedipus was developed by director Seo Jae-hyung and writer-lyricist Han A-reum, who had previously created the 2011 music-theatre work The Chorus; Oedipus. The new musical retained its chorus-centred theatrical approach but was reworked with a new score comprising 22 songs by Taiwanese composer Chang Hsin-Tzu.

Produced through a collaboration between the Gwanak Cultural Foundation and its resident company, JUKDAL Theatre, the work was developed outside the commercial Daehakro production system. It represents a publicly supported model of musical development involving international creative collaboration.

Partial Synopsis

Oedipus tries to save Thebes by uncovering the cause of its calamity. His investigation reveals that he has unknowingly fulfilled the prophecy he spent his life trying to escape, destroying his family and rule.

A Korean-language run with Chinese surtitles at the 2023 New Taipei City Musical Festival, presented by C MUSICAL and Sincere LAB. Marketed as an immersive reinterpretation of Greek tragedy, it was noted in local arts press as a rare case of a Korean original musical, rather than a K-pop-based show, reaching Taiwan through public cultural exchange.
