Summary

Three monks leave their bankrupt monastery for Italy, confronting modern temptations and personal doubts as they struggle to preserve their faith, music, and life together.

Origin & Development

2016, music by Ryu Chan, lyrics and book by Lee Soo-jin, directed and produced by Lee Seok-jun. Based on the 2002 German film Vaya con Dios. Produced by Yagin Musical Company. Premiered at Dongsung Art Center, Seoul. Originally developed through a 2015 trial performance and later selected as a Korea Arts Council supported production.

Partial Synopsis

After being excommunicated by the Church, the last surviving Cantorian monastery faces closure when its financial support ends. Three monks — Benno, Arvo, and Tasilo — depart for Italy carrying the order’s treasured rulebook, encountering the outside world for the first time. Along the journey they meet Kiira, a pragmatic journalist whose presence challenges their ideals. The musical balances light comedy with reflective themes of faith, temptation, purpose, and the search for inner conviction.
