Summary

A grieving man recreates his lost wife through artificial intelligence, raising intimate questions about love, memory, and what makes someone human.

Origin & Development

You & It was developed as an intimate science-fiction musical about bereavement and artificial intelligence, in which one man's attempt to reconstruct his late wife examines memory, identity, and emotional dependence. It premiered in 2018 on a small rooftop stage in Daegu and won the Creative Musical Award at the 2019 Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF).

International development began in 2023, when the show was presented in London as You&AI at the Wonderville Theatre in collaboration with UK-based Carter Dixon McGill Productions, and it returned to the same venue for a further showcase in 2024. In August 2024 it joined the Assembly Korean Season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as a fully localized English-language production, with Rumi Sutton (Your Lie in April) as Mina and Christopher Chung (Here Lies Love) as Gyujin, musical direction by Lee Eung-gyu, and keyboard by Daeun Min. Scottish Field gave it five stars, and it was selected for Mervyn Stutter's Pick of the Fringe 2024.

The musical examines loneliness and the erosion of emotional intimacy in what it calls a "nano-society," asking through the relationship between Gyujin and AI-Mina whether love can survive when memory and identity are artificially reconstructed. Performed by two actors, its score combines piano, minimal electronics, and lyrical vocal lines.
