SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set in the afterlife following death, the musical unfolds across the underworld courts and seven hells, where a deceased man must face judgment for his life.
All souls travel to the afterlife by train, guided by the three underworld guardians—Gangrim, Haewonmaek, and Deokchun. The deceased are assigned trials lasting 49 days, passing through seven hell gates to determine their fate.
Kim Jae-hong, an ordinary man who died at the age of thirty-nine, enters this process under the defense of lawyer Jin Gi-han, who seeks justice through compassion. As the trials progress, Jin Gi-han advocates for fairness, challenging the rigid judgment system of the underworld.
Meanwhile, Gangrim and the other guardians pursue a vengeful spirit that escaped the afterlife. Upon learning the spirit’s tragic story, Gangrim chooses to intervene, questioning the strict rules that forbid interference in the human world.
As the trials and parallel 사건 unfold, the musical contrasts law and compassion, punishment and redemption, ultimately presenting a vision of justice grounded in humanity.
PRODUCTION NOTE
Along with the Gods: The Afterworld was produced by the Seoul Performing Arts Company and premiered in 2015 at the CJ Towol Theater in Seoul Arts Center. It is based on Joo Ho-min’s widely popular webtoon, which has also been adapted into films and other media.
The musical distinguishes itself from the film adaptations by maintaining closer fidelity to the original webtoon structure, emphasizing courtroom drama and episodic trials. Its staging is notable for large-scale visual elements, including LED floor screens and symbolic set pieces representing the afterlife.
The production became one of the company’s signature repertory works, achieving high audience attendance rates and critical acclaim.
