The most difficult bathroom situation: I waited until the ballet scene started in Phantom of the Opera before leaving my seat for the restroom. Thankfully, I was allowed back in through the rear entrance. I ended up sitting alone under the overhang during “All I Ask of You,” and it was strangely magical.

 

화장실 때문에 가장 힘들었던 때: 오페라의 유령 발레 장면이 나올 때까지 기다리다가 객석을 나와 화장실에 갔는데, 다행히 뒷문으로 재입장을 허락받았다. 결국 맨 뒤 뚜껑 아래에서 혼자 “All I Ask of You”를 들었는데 이상할 정도로 황홀했다.

 

 

My theater routine (after the Phantom ballet scene incident): I drink plenty of water up to three hours before the show, then mostly switch to solid food. Minimal water afterward, and no coffee if possible.

Double-header survival strategy: stay near the theater district in New York. Have a light meal after the matinee, rest briefly at the hotel, and arrive at the next theater at least 20 minutes early. For nearby theaters, stage doors are best attempted after evening shows. Matinees are usually skipped because lead actors often do not come out anyway.

My three-show day experience: Vital’s Wizard of Oz (ages 2+), Maybe Happy Ending, and Just In Time. Absolutely exhausting and absolutely worth it. Jonathan Groff’s ending was unreal.

The most reckless theater schedule: watching the final four Busan performances of Phantom of the Opera over three days in 2023. I thought I would enjoy every second, but by the third evening performance I briefly wished the show would end right after the chandelier crash. The next morning I woke up rested and became excited all over again for the final show.

 

무모했던 관극 일정: 2023년 부산 오페라의 유령 마지막 4회를 3일에 걸쳐 연달아 본 것. 마냥 좋을 줄 알았는데 3번째 저녁 공연에는 샹들리에 떨어진 후 막 내렸으면 했음. 하지만 다음날 막공에서는 잘 자고 일어나 다시 흥분했음

 

 

The most disappointing Broadway experience: after a 14-hour flight, I went to Phantom of the Opera the next day and slept until the chandelier crash. I thought the show had ended and was relieved to discover there was still an entire second act left. “Think of Me”? Was there such a song? (My third Phantom experience.)

The most disappointing Korean theater experience: jet lag after a business trip, then straight to the final performance of Hadestown. Slept through most of Act I. Still, Epic is Epic III. That’s good enough.

 

허무했던 한국 공연: 출장 후 돌아오자마자 막공 하데스타운 보러 갔는데 시차 때문에 1막 잘 잤음. Epic은 Epic III지. 그거 들었으면 됐지.

 

 

Peak theater fan behavior: leaving home a day early before an overseas trip because a favorite actor was performing in Incheon, staying near Incheon Airport after the show, and flying out the next morning. Nobody in the family found this strange anymore.

 

덕후 모먼트 ON: 출장 전날 인천 공연하는 최애 배우 때문에 하루 먼저 집에서 나와 인천공항 근처에 숙박후 출국했는데 식구들이 아무도 이상하게 생각하지 않음

 

 

The most confusing moment: I used to know every theater route by heart thanks to repeatedly seeing my favorite actor there. Then I went to a different show after a long time and it felt like someone had pressed the reset button. Suddenly I remembered nothing.

 

가장 혼란스러운 순간: 최애 배우 덕분에 극장 동선을 다 외웠었는데 오랜만에 다른 공연 보러 갔더니 reset button 눌렸음. 하나도 기억 안 남.

How many musicals can you watch in Korea in one week?: Most productions do not perform on Mondays. Tuesday and Thursday usually have one show, while Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday often have two. Realistically, around ten shows per week is possible. Most Seoul theaters are reachable within an hour by subway, so attending all of them is technically possible. Holidays such as Chuseok, Lunar New Year, and Christmas sometimes add extra performances.

A budget-efficient Broadway plan for musical fans: arrive Tuesday morning. Tuesday 1 show, Wednesday 2, Thursday 1, Friday 1, Saturday 2, Sunday 1 before flying home at night. Five hotel nights, eight shows. Even if the hotel is expensive, staying within walking distance of the theaters is worth it. Walk everywhere. Bagels, Whole Foods, and occasional good meals (not outrageously expensive compared to Seoul).

The most unforgettable understudy performance: during a Daegu performance of The Phantom of the Opera, an announcement came after Act I that Kwon Gamin would take over for Song Eun-hye. At first she sounded visibly nervous, but “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” was stunning. She made it all the way through “The Point of No Return,” and during curtain call I shouted “Kwon Gamin!” at the top of my lungs. A true Christine moment!

 

가장 놀라웠던 언더스터디 공연: 오페라의 유령 대구 공연에서 1막 후 송은혜 배우의 난조로 권가민 배우가 올라온다는 공지가 있었다. 처음에는 떨면서 노래했는데 ‘Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again’가 너무 좋았다. 결국 ‘The Point of No Return’까지 완주했고, 커튼콜에서목 터져라 “권가민!”을 외쳤다. 진정한 크리스틴 모먼트!

 

 

Favorite alternate performances: J. Quinton Johnson as George Washington in Hamilton — an incredible voice. The alternate Eponine at the 2025 Kennedy Center production of Les Misérables had a mezzo-soprano, almost alto-like tone, and sang one of the most memorable “I Dreamed a Dream” performances I have ever heard. In the Korean musical Arang / 몽유도원, Yoon Je-won performed only three times as the alternate Domi, but the sudden pansori-like turn in “어이해 이러십니까” was electrifying.

 

인상 깊었던 얼터네이트 배우들: J. Quinton Johnson의 Hamilton 조지 워싱턴 역 — 목소리가 정말 좋았다. 2025년 Kennedy Center의 Les Misérables 에포닌 얼터네이트 배우는 메조소프라노, 거의 알토 같은 톤이었는데 지금까지 들은 “I Dreamed a Dream” 중 가장 인상적이었다. 한국 창작 뮤지컬 몽유도원에서는 윤제원 배우가 도미 역 얼터네이트로 단 3회 공연했는데, ‘어이해 이러십니까’에서 판소리처럼 바뀌는 순간이 정말 짜릿했다.

 

 

The Korean original musical I have watched the most: 빨래 / Laundry. I first saw it in 2008, watched it frequently for a while, and still return every year or two.
