SYNOPSIS

(Partial Synopsis)

Set in contemporary Korea, the musical unfolds around four young men returning from military service, where uncertainty, friendship, and social purpose shape their attempts to begin new lives.

After returning to civilian society, the four protagonists struggle with frustration and disorientation, confronting personal setbacks while seeking meaning and belonging. Through encounters with family, community, and romantic possibility, the drama follows their efforts to transform disappointment into contribution.

Unlike earlier Yegreen productions rooted in legend or historical spectacle, the work appears to have emphasized contemporary social optimism, generational identity, and collective forward movement, likely combining dramatic narrative with ensemble-driven musical numbers.

제작 노트

Premiered in November 1972 at Seoul Citizen’s Hall, We Are Here was presented by contemporaries as a notable departure from Yegreen’s earlier emphasis on reinterpreted classics and historical pageantry, instead pursuing explicitly modern subject matter.

Its focus on discharged youth and social participation places it among early Korean attempts at a “contemporary musical” in a stronger modern sense. The casting of popular entertainers including folk singer performers alongside Yegreen regulars also suggests a deliberate attempt to broaden public appeal.

Coming in the same year as O Bell, Ring Out, the work also illustrates the remarkable stylistic range of late Yegreen—from monumental symbolic spectacle to socially oriented contemporary musical.
