SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set in contemporary North Korea, the musical unfolds in Yoduk political prison camp, where a celebrated dancer is imprisoned with her family after being accused of political betrayal.

Kang Ryun-hwa, once a celebrated dancer and honored performer in North Korea, lives a privileged life until she is suddenly accused due to her father being labeled a spy. She and her entire family are sent to Yoduk Camp No. 15, a notorious political prison camp.

Inside the camp, Ryun-hwa experiences brutal violence and systemic abuse. The camp commander, Ri Myung-su, assaults her, and she becomes pregnant with his child. Her attempt to take her own life fails, as even suicide is considered a political crime, leading to further punishment and isolation.

Despite the inhuman conditions, Ryun-hwa struggles to survive. Eventually, she attempts to escape to South Korea with the help of Myung-su. However, he is executed for assisting her escape, highlighting the absolute brutality of the regime.

The musical portrays not only the physical suffering within the camp but also themes of endurance, sacrifice, and the human capacity to seek hope amid extreme oppression.

제작 노트

Yoduk Story was created by North Korean defector and filmmaker Jung Sung-san, who sought to expose human rights abuses in North Korea. Initially planned as a film, the project was adapted into a musical due to budget limitations. The work is based on testimonies and real accounts from North Korean prison camps and incorporates strong humanitarian and religious themes, including forgiveness and redemption.
