SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set across multiple time periods—from the Joseon Dynasty to the Japanese colonial era and into modern Seoul—the musical unfolds in Pimatgol, a historic alleyway, where love, injustice, and memory persist across centuries.

In Joseon-era Hanyang, Kim Saeng, a talented scholar of low birth, lives modestly in Pimatgol, helping its residents while unable to advance socially. To help a friend, he takes an exam on his behalf, leading Hong Saeng to achieve top honors. When Hong Saeng attempts to cut down the alley’s symbolic apricot tree during his celebratory procession, Kim Saeng reveals the truth, provoking Hong Saeng’s wrath.

Hong Saeng captures and attempts to kill Kim Saeng, but his sister Hong Rang secretly rescues him. As she nurses him back to health, the two fall deeply in love. However, their happiness is short-lived: Hong Saeng discovers their relationship, murders Kim Saeng, and Hong Rang takes her own life in despair.

The story then shifts beyond death. The spirit of the apricot tree, Haengmae, revives Kim Saeng and reveals that time has passed into a new era. Though separated by death, Kim Saeng longs to reunite with Hong Rang. With the help of supernatural beings, including spirits and divided groups of rats symbolizing conflict, he navigates a transformed world.

Ultimately, Kim Saeng is granted a single night to reunite with Hong Rang beyond the boundary of life and death. Their meeting affirms their enduring love before they part once more, leaving behind a timeless echo of longing tied to Pimatgol itself.
