SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set across 1983 and 2000, the musical unfolds in Seoul and a high school setting, where a man’s first love appears to return to him in another life, forcing him to confront memory, grief, and social judgment.

In the summer of 1983, In-woo, a university student who does not believe in love at first sight, meets Tae-hee when she suddenly jumps under his umbrella on a rainy day. Her boldness, beauty, and vivid presence quickly overwhelm his heart. After searching for her and finally finding her again on campus, the two grow close and become lovers. Their romance deepens through small, intimate moments, but their happiness is interrupted when In-woo must enter military service. Tae-hee promises to see him off at Yongsan Station, yet on her way there she dies in a traffic accident, leaving In-woo with only the memory of their love.

Seventeen years later, in the spring of 2000, In-woo is now a Korean literature teacher at a high school, married, and outwardly living a different life, though he has never truly forgotten Tae-hee. Among his students is Hyun-bin, a boy whose gestures, habits, and possessions uncannily resemble Tae-hee. He spreads his little finger the same way she did, carries a lighter engraved with her face, and even asks the same questions she once asked. As In-woo becomes increasingly shaken by these similarities, he comes to believe that Hyun-bin is Tae-hee reincarnated.

Unable to suppress his emotions, In-woo is drawn toward Hyun-bin, and rumors spread through the school that he is a homosexual teacher obsessed with a male student. Hyun-bin, hurt and confused by the ridicule, lashes out at him. But when In-woo breaks down in tears and asks why Tae-hee does not recognize him, Hyun-bin begins to recover the memories of Tae-hee’s former life. In the end, In-woo loses his job and his family. Later, he encounters Hyun-bin at the platform of Yongsan Station, where he and Tae-hee were meant to meet seventeen years earlier. Together, they leave for New Zealand, the place Tae-hee had once wanted to visit, and go bungee jumping.

제작 노트

Bungee Jumping of Their Own is based on the 2001 Korean film of the same title. Produced by Musical Heaven, the stage adaptation was first set in motion in 2007, followed by a workshop in New York in 2008 and a tryout presentation at the Daegu International Musical Festival in 2010 before its full Seoul premiere in 2012.

The musical features music by Will Aronson and lyrics by Hue Park, and became known for translating the emotional tone of the film into a musically driven stage language. Adrian Osmond directed the Daegu tryout and the 2012 premiere, Lee Jae-jun directed the 2013 revival, and Kim Min-jung directed the 2018 production. After Musical Heaven entered court receivership in 2014, the work disappeared for a time before returning in 2018 in a co-production with Dal Company for the 40th anniversary of Sejong Center. In 2022, it returned again in a newly reworked production by SYNWAVE, with director Sim Seol-in emphasizing character reconstruction and a renewed cinematic approach.

The musical received recognition for its score, winning music-related awards including honors at the Korea Musical Awards and The Musical Awards.
