SYNOPSIS

(Full Synopsis)

Set in 1791 Vienna, the musical unfolds within the royal court and artistic circles, where a respected composer faces the arrival of a genius that shatters his sense of identity.

Antonio Salieri is a celebrated court composer enjoying prestige and recognition when he encounters the young prodigy Mozart. Mozart’s music overwhelms him, awakening both admiration and deep insecurity.

At the same time, a mysterious figure named Jealous appears, claiming to support Salieri while subtly intensifying his inner turmoil. As Salieri competes with Mozart for royal recognition, his growing jealousy and fear begin to consume him.

Unable to reconcile his admiration with his inferiority, Salieri is driven into psychological collapse. The story unfolds as a retrospective, with Salieri recalling his fall from greatness, revealing how jealousy and self-denial ultimately lead to his destruction.

제작 노트

Salieri was produced by HJ Culture and premiered in 2014 at Sejong M Theater. It is part of a series of composer-centered musicals focusing on historical figures such as Mozart and Salieri.

The work draws inspiration from historical narratives and adaptations such as Pushkin’s “Mozart and Salieri” and later reinterpretations including the play and film “Amadeus.” A distinctive feature of this musical is the character “Jealous,” a personification of Salieri’s inner emotions, adding a psychological dimension to the narrative.

The production was later revived in a large-scale version in 2016, expanding from a mid-size theater to a major venue, reflecting its growing popularity.
