SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set between 1907 and the 1910s, the musical unfolds across Korea and Manchuria, where young people gather to resist colonial rule and fight for national independence.
As the Japanese Empire tightens control over Korea following the forced abdication of Emperor Gojong and the subsequent annexation, the country falls into chaos. Amid violent suppression and the collapse of sovereignty, a young man named Dong-gyu witnesses his father’s death at the hands of colonial forces, leaving him devastated and determined to act.
National leaders such as Lee Hoe-young and Lee Sang-ryong lead a movement of exile to Manchuria, envisioning a new nation where the people, regardless of class, can claim ownership of their future. With the help of Hye-ran and others, they establish Shinhung Military School in West Jiandao as a training ground for independence fighters.
Young people from across the country—including Dong-gyu, Pal-do, Na-pal, and others—gather at the school. Through rigorous military training, shared hardship, and ideological commitment, they form strong bonds of friendship and solidarity. Each character carries their own personal story, but they are united by a common goal: to reclaim their homeland.
As the school grows in influence, Japanese authorities and collaborators such as Terauchi and Yi Wan-yong attempt to suppress its activities. The students face increasing danger, forced to confront both external threats and the sacrifices required for their cause.
Ultimately, the story highlights the courage and idealism of a generation that gave up family, comfort, and even life itself in pursuit of independence. Their spirit endures beyond their time, forming a legacy that continues into the present.

The musical was produced by the Republic of Korea Army and created in collaboration with production company Shownote. Premiering in 2018 at the National Museum of Korea Theater Yong, it was later revived in 2019 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Movement and the establishment of the Provisional Government of Korea. The work combines historical events with fictionalized characters to dramatize the origins of Korea’s independence movement and the founding of Shinhung Military School.
