SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set in 17th-century Paris, the musical unfolds within the French royal court and surrounding society, where political corruption and hidden lineage ignite conflict among former comrades.
The story begins with a long-standing secret within the royal family: twin sons are born, but only one is allowed to ascend the throne, while the other is imprisoned in secrecy wearing an iron mask. Years later, King Louis XIV rules France with indifference to the suffering of his people, indulging in luxury while the nation falls into hardship.
Meanwhile, the legendary Three Musketeers—Athos, Aramis, and Porthos—have retired and live separate lives. D’Artagnan, however, remains active as the captain of the king’s guard, bound by loyalty to the crown. When the king’s tyranny deepens and personal tragedies unfold, including the death of Athos’s son due to royal cruelty, the former comrades are drawn back together.
Aramis devises a plan to overthrow the king by rescuing his imprisoned twin brother, Philippe, and placing him on the throne. Athos and Porthos join the cause, believing it to be a path toward justice for the people. D’Artagnan, torn between loyalty to the king and his bond with his friends, initially refuses to participate.
As the plan unfolds, Philippe is freed and prepared to replace Louis XIV. However, the attempt fails at a critical moment due to D’Artagnan’s intervention. The failed coup leads to further conflict, arrests, and escalating tension.
In the aftermath, hidden truths are revealed—most significantly, that Philippe is connected more deeply to D’Artagnan than anyone realized. Confronted with the moral weight of his choices and the corruption of the regime he serves, D’Artagnan ultimately joins the Musketeers in a final effort to restore justice.
In the climactic confrontation, the balance of power shifts. Louis XIV is overthrown and imprisoned behind the iron mask, while Philippe ascends the throne. The Musketeers are honored for their actions, and the story concludes with a sense of restored order, though shaped by sacrifice, betrayal, and the complexities of loyalty.
제작 노트
particularly the legend of the Man in the Iron Mask, and incorporates elements from later adaptations, including film interpretations.
