(Full Synopsis)

Set in 1976, the musical unfolds in a coal mining town in Kentucky, where workers rise against the exploitation of the Eastover Mining Company.

Daniel, a young man seeking freedom alongside Riley—the Black man who raised him—heads north toward New York. Their journey is interrupted when they witness a murder connected to the miners’ struggle, drawing them into Harlan County.

There, miners led by union members fight for their rights amid escalating tensions with the company. As outsiders, Daniel and Riley initially face suspicion, but gradually become entangled in the community’s conflict.

The narrative intertwines labor struggle and racial injustice, depicting a society where, despite the formal abolition of slavery, inequality persists. As the truth behind the violence emerges, personal sacrifice and solidarity shape the fate of the characters.

Ultimately, Daniel remains in Harlan County, choosing to stand with the workers, while Riley’s fate underscores the cost of freedom.
