SYNOPSIS

(Partial Synopsis)

Set in the early 20th century and later years in exile, the musical unfolds between the battlefields of Korea’s independence struggle and a theater in Kazakhstan, where a once-renowned general lives in obscurity.

The story centers on Hong Beom-do, a legendary independence fighter who led victorious battles such as Bongodong and Cheongsanri. In his later life, after forced migration to Central Asia, he works as a caretaker at a theater. There, his past and present begin to intertwine.

As a group of artists attempts to stage a play about his life, the narrative shifts between reenactments of his heroic past and reflections on his personal struggles, losses, and doubts. The work presents not only the mythologized hero but also the human being behind the legend.

Through this layered structure, the musical explores themes of memory, representation, and the role of theatre in preserving history, ultimately asking what it means to remember and portray a hero.

제작 노트

The Independence Warrior in Front of the Theater was created in 2019 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Provisional Government of Korea and the victory at the Battle of Bongodong.

Produced by the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, the work brought together multiple affiliated artistic companies—including orchestra, dance, opera, theatre, and musical ensembles—marking one of the first large-scale collaborative productions of its kind.

Directed by Kim Kwang-bo and written by Go Yeon-ok, the piece adopts a meta-theatrical approach, framing Hong Beom-do’s life within a play-within-a-play structure. The production emphasizes his later years in Kazakhstan, offering a reflective perspective on both personal history and the meaning of theatre itself.
